Living in Brazil

What to expect when you arrive

🏠
Finding Accommodation
Shared housing is common and affordable. Websites like OLX, QuintoAndar, and Zap Imóveis are widely used. Gated communities (condomínios) are popular for safety. Short-term furnished apartments via Airbnb are a practical option while settling in. Landlords typically require a local guarantor or 3 months' deposit.
🍳
Food & Culture
Brazilian food is bold, diverse, and deeply social. Churrasco (BBQ), feijoada, fresh tropical fruits, and açaí bowls are everyday staples. Eating out is very affordable — a restaurant lunch (prato feito) often costs R$20–R$35. Food markets are vibrant and a great way to experience local life.
🏥
Healthcare
Brazil has a public healthcare system (SUS) available to residents. Many expats and teachers opt for private health insurance (plano de saúde), which is affordable and gives access to excellent private hospitals and clinics. Your employer may include health insurance as part of your contract.
🎉
Culture & Social Life
Brazil's social culture is second to none. Brazilians are open, friendly, and love to socialise — football matches, beach days, samba nights, and Carnival are woven into everyday life. Learning Portuguese basics will unlock a completely different level of connection and community.
Visas & Entry

How to get your work visa for Brazil

Brazil requires a work visa for foreign nationals taking up employment. The most common route for English teachers is the VITEM V (temporary work visa), sponsored by your employer. Brazil also offers digital nomad and investor visas that some teachers use creatively.

The process requires patience but is well-documented. Having a CELTA qualification gives you a strong advantage in securing sponsoring employers, particularly at reputable international language schools like CCAA, Cultura Inglesa, and Wizard.
